Luckily this didn't happen and the pilot was abel to divert the plane to a Eareckson Air Station which is a remote military airbase located on Shemya, in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands. At points during the emergency landing passengers can smell smoke throughout the plane making them think there could be a fire onboard the plane. From a press release later released by Cathay Pacific we found out that a cooling fan had failed in the control room below the cockpit and had caused several smoke detectors to be activated. Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, also trading as THAI is the flag carrier airline of Thailand. Formed in 1988, the airline has its corporate headquarters in Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Chatuchak District, Bangkok, and primarily operates out of Suvarnabhumi Airport. THAI is a founding member of the Star Alliance. The airline is the largest shareholder of the low-cost carrier Nok Air with a 49% stake, and it launched a regional carrier under the name Thai Smile in the middle of 2012 using new Airbus A320 aircraft. From its hub at Suvarnabhumi Airport, THAI flies to 78 destinations in 35 countries, using a fleet of more than 80 aircraft. The airline was once the operator of two of the world's longest non-stop routes between Bangkok and Los Angeles and New York City, but due to high fuel prices, the withdrawal of aircraft, luggage weight limits and rising airfares, the airline abandoned all non-stop U.S. services in 2012 indefinitely. As of 2013, services between Bangkok and Los Angeles are served via Incheon International Airport near Seoul. THAI's route network is dominated by flights to Europe, East Asia, and South/Southwest Asia, though the airline serves Johannesburg in South Africa and five cities in Oceania. THAI was the first Asia-Pacific airline to serve London Heathrow Airport. Among Asia-Pacific carriers, THAI has one of the largest passenger operations in Europe. THAI is currently an official sponsor of Bangkok United and Red Bull Racing. While celebrating its 50-year anniversary in 2010, THAI, spearheaded by Piyasvasti Amranand, its president and a former energy minister, charted new plans for the airline's future, including a significant aircraft fleet renewal and an upgrade of existing services. THAI has since placed orders for a number of aircraft, including the cost-efficient Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, and it has also launched a refurbishment of its Boeing 747 and 777 cabins. Mindful of rising fuel costs, the airline have now phased-out the most inefficient aircraft, including its Airbus A340-500s. The airline took delivery of its first Airbus A380 aircraft in the last half of 2012, intending to eventually deploy the aircraft on its core European routes. THAI has also resumed its network expansion with the resumption of flights to Brussels, in addition to a new non-stop flight from Copenhagen to Phuket. At the same time, the Greek debt crisis caused THAI to suspend its services to Athens. As part of THAI's broader growth strategy in the region, THAI launched a regional carrier with light-premium services, Thai Smile which operate narrow-bodied Airbus A320-200 on regional and domestic routes. The new airline initiated commercial operations in July 2012, after its first A320s were received. THAI expects to be the first carrier in Asia to fly commercial flights using biofuels. The carrier launched the initiative with experimental flights in December 2011 as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program, otherwise known as "Travel Green." THAI hopes to stimulate sustained biofuel production in Thailand by working with Thai government agencies and regional corporate partners, such as PTT Public Company Limited. The effort aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in regional air travel as well as position Thailand to be the "bio hub" of Asia. The Boeing 747-400 is a major development and the best-selling model of the Boeing 747 family of jet airliners. While retaining the four-engine wide-body layout of its predecessors, the 747-400 embodies numerous technological and structural changes to produce a more efficient airframe. Its most distinguishing features versus preceding 747 models are 6-foot (1.8 m) winglets mounted on 6-foot (1.8 m) wing tip extensions, which are found on all 747-400s except for Japanese domestic market versions. The 747-400 is equipped with a two-crew glass cockpit, which dispenses with the need for a flight engineer, along with more fuel-efficient engines, an optional fuel tank in the horizontal stabilizer, and revised fuselage/wing fairings. The aircraft also features an all-new interior with upgraded in-flight entertainment architecture. As on the 747-300, passenger variants include a stretched upper deck as standard. The model has a maximum capacity of 660 passengers with the 747-400D variant, and can fly non-stop for up to 7,670 nautical miles (14,200 km) with maximum payload, depending on model. Northwest Airlines first placed the 747-400 in commercial service in February 9, 1989. The 747-400 was produced in passenger (−400), freighter (−400F), combi (−400M), domestic (−400D), extended range passenger (−400ER) and extended range freighter (−400ERF) versions.

- PLEASE READ - [FLIGHT EXPERIENCE including the lounges] SHORT review (less than 5 mins): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbQx5WwFPSo FULL Take off clip URL: available soon SHORT Take off clip URL: available soon FULL Landing clip URL: available soon SHORT Landing clip URL: available soon WELCOME to my first flight review in 2017. On 9th January, I flew Malaysia Airlines MH73 service from Hong Kong (HKG) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL). The operating aircraft was an Airbus A330-300. As I am a Oneworld Sapphire member, I have access to priority check-in, priority boarding and access to the lounges in HKG. My comment to the lounges I visited: The Qantas HK lounge was spacious and quiet in the noon. The staff were friendly and happy to help. Since Japan Airlines recommends the Qantas HK lounge to their premium customers, a lot of food was in Japanese style, this included Japanese curry, miso soup and teriyaki chicken. They were all tasty. I ordered HK style milk tea at the bar which was good too. The Wing was quite busy and I had trouble finding a seat in most areas. I ordered 2 bowls of noodles in the Noddle Bar. Then I had a quick shower before my way to the gate in the new satellite. Qantas HK lounge is full of surprises, so even if you are travelling with Cathay Pacific, I highly recommend the Qantas lounge. It’s next to the immigration (above gate 15). My comment to the flight: I received a warm welcome from the flight attendants, and as soon as I reached my seat, I found myself a pillow, a blanket and a headset. I was surprised by this since it was just a short flight. The flight was (nearly) 100% full, but I still found the cabin spacious and comfortable. The legroom is great (even for a long haul flight), the recline angle is big as well. The screen was not responsive at all. Fortunately, there was a remote controller which was easier to use. There were two lunch options and they were both delicious. The staff were happy to offer me an extra drink along with my lunch. Although the inflight entertainment system is fine for short flights, it might be a bit boring for long flights as the amount of movies were limited. The lavatories were kept clean and neat throughout the flight. Overall, I had a good flight. I would recommend Malaysia Airlines A330-300 economy class to everyone. I would like to try their economy class in A380 and A350. MH73 was downgraded from an A380 to B777, then to B737. MH has recently upgraded to a larger A330-300 which I experienced on the 9th January. MH flies three times a day from KUL to HKG (2x B737 & 1 B737), its Oneworld partner Cathay Pacific flies to KUL four to five times a day with many different aircrafts including the B777-300ER and A330-300. Air Asia and Malindo Air also fly between the cities with their A320 and B737. None of the airlines in Skyteam and Star Alliance fly between the cities.
